10,000 Steps – 10,000 People

  • Situation:

Kaiser Permanente’s mission involves efforts to encourage healthy living and disease prevention. The health of employees is a cornerstone: healthy employees set an example and are better equipped to serve members.

  • Obstacles:

The organization has 160,000 employees — located throughout the country in disparate locations. How do we reach them and rollout the program in a unified way?

  • Actions:

Ignited the interest of employees through the development of a compelling campaign:

    • Developed campaign theme.
    • Sought and received funding to provide all employees with pedometers, including free online access to track progress and results.
    • Wrote articles; created door hangers and posters; distributed tool kit to promote the campaign.
    • Live pedometer online showing real-time number of people joining the program.
  • Results:

    Exceeded goal and expectations:

    • Set cap of 10.000 entrants, but in four days that goal was met, so extended the cap to 12,000 entrants.
    • Demonstration of how to model the values of the organization.
